So, I ran into a problem with a tooth. I got an abscess down at the root level, and there was a root canal that was done by a former dentist that continued to be a problem for me. And Dr. Despain did an extraction of that tooth, but it had got into another tooth adjacent to that. Once we got down to where I had two teeth adjacent to each other, I’d asked about something to fill that gap. I’m not a big fan of bridges. I’ve got family members had bridges, and they’re kind of… their maintenance issues. And we had talked about an implant. Talking with Dr. Despain, it was, again, a one-stop shop. He was able to go in, do the prep work, put the implant in, mapped out the mouth, and printed a tooth.
Within a couple of weeks, I was starting to use it and chew on food. And now, I don’t even know that I have an implant. I just use it to… like I did the rest of my teeth. And in fact, I’m getting set up to have another one put in shortly after the first of the year to fill a gap that I have from an extraction years ago, like 40 years ago. I want to get that gap filled now. One of the reasons I’m getting the one that I want next year is, the gap that I have from the one extraction on the bottom is not a real good candidate for an implant. So, I have this kind of an overlap gap. Yes, I still use that side of my mouth, but I can’t use it as efficiently as I can the other side. So, by putting an implant in that gap that’s there from years ago, that’ll realign the teeth where I can go back to normal eating.

When I first came in the very first time, I had two veneers done at one time, and they can be not overly expensive but they can be costly, and I was told about a financial program. Got me signed up. It took, like, a very short amount of time, and they coordinated everything here between that lender and here, and just really just kept everything, you know, just moving right along there. So no hassles. That was the great part. No hassles. Got it done and yep, came back for more.
I was eating a piece of hard candy, and my tooth at work broke, crumbled, and I was left with this little tiny nub. I was able to call first thing in the morning and have him get me in that day, took a look at it. He placed a crown built up a crown. It didn’t take well. And so, three weeks later, it popped, broke, and the whole tooth came out, but he was able to go in and remove the pieces from my gum and whatnot. Placed an implant, and that’s where we were left. I had a four-month period where I had to wait for the bone to heal. So, I had a little, I forget what it’s called, a flipper or flapper, or whatever. A little retainer with a tooth on it to hold the place of my…where the new tooth was gonna be.
Again, with my anxiety level, and I’ve always had issues with numbing, they use gas for me. Now, I’m just pretty much for any of the surgeries, or fillings, or anything that they have to be prolonged with me having my mouth open for a really long period of time just to help me relax. Once that process is, you know, once he’s numbed everything or whatever, I pretty much… I put in my earbuds and listen to my music, and then we’re done. So, don’t really…I try not to focus too much on what’s happening, especially since it’s my very front teeth that I’ve had these issues with.

My husband is a diabetic and has been for, well, he’s 70 years old, and he was 15 when it was diagnosed. On top of that, he flipped a four-wheeler over on his back, and he’s a paraplegic. So, doing dental implants didn’t seem quite reasonable. One, because of his age and two, because of the bone loss that’s created by the diabetes.
So we decided on just having the partial done, and that has worked very well for him. He is very pleased with it, and it seems to fit very well. And it looks very natural. He has no problem eating whatsoever whether it’s corn on the cob or steak that it has not been any problem whatsoever.
He is fairly mobile from being able to transfer from his chair and that, but just getting the wheelchair through the front door. But then once we’re in the office, it’s all handicapped accessible. So he does very well whether it’s, even if he has to use their restroom, it can accommodate him.
He actually was the one who found the practice. He was having a problem with a tooth and made some phone calls. Our original dentist had given us a list of dentists that they kind of recommended, and he called a couple of them. And one of them was actually made the recommendation to call here to Dr. Despain. Because they couldn’t get him in, in a reasonable amount of time, and that’s how we started with Dr. Despain. And once he went to him and was pleased, had set up for his cleaning, then I said, “Well, let’s set up for mine.” And, of course, we hadn’t been to a dentist for about two years because of COVID.

When I came in the first time, Dr. Despain told me that if it’s black underneath, your tooth is rotting. And it’s like, I noticed that I had this bad breath and I could stick a toothpick under this crown that this dentist I won’t name put on. And when I went back to ’em, they said, “There’s nothing wrong with it.” And I’m like, “Really? You’re not gonna do anything, you know?” And so I’m like, I was embarrassed, you know? I mean, I just let it go because I didn’t know who to go to. So I thought, “Okay, this is gonna start hurting me. I’m gonna be on vacation and I don’t want it to hurt.” And there was lots of foods I couldn’t eat because, like these two back here they put on, that was like just one big filling. I mean, part of it fell out before I even got…before the doctor even got to that one.
I have a bridge down here that’s good still I think. But these two front ones, they were thick and they weren’t right. They didn’t fit my mouth right. And they were just black. This one over here is black. And I’m like, “Oh, I have to save some more money.” But yeah, and I just thought, “You know, I gotta get this done. I don’t wanna spend the rest of my life not, you know, smiling because I’m a smiler.” I’m like, “Thank God, somebody that sees what I need, what I want, what needs to be done properly.” Because like I said, I just felt like this was it. This was a good fit for me. I knew when I got done, I was gonna have that smile that I’ve always wanted. And I told my daughter, I said, “I need to find a shade of red lipstick.” She’s like, “Why mom, you don’t wear makeup?” I said, “I know, but I want some red lipstick. I want red lipstick.” Not like the neon or just little red lipstick. And as soon as these holes gets…I’m gonna get me some red lipstick and I can’t wait.

Whether it’s hereditary or however, I do have four teeth that crack easily. And of course age, I’m getting bone loss. And so, that’s what necessitated the crowns. Some of the crowns were preexisting and we just had to replace them because there were cavities that had arisen underneath the crowns. So, that was what’s caused that. They’re made in-house so it’s a much faster. You’re not getting a temporary and waiting two weeks to get it from the west side.
So, you’re done the day you get ’em in. Made for a long morning, because I had three done on one side and then came back and had three done on another side. And it does take a while for them to be made, but at least it’s all done in-house. And when I come in and I know I’m gonna be in the chair for a while, I’m always the first one to say, “I want a warm blanket over me.” Because when you’re laying there and they’re busy working, it’s a little…they keep the room a little cooler than what I’d like. So, that always helps.

I just said, “You know what I need, you know what’s gonna work, let’s do it. I trust you to get…” And he goes, “Well, it’s way better than dentures.” And I’m like, “Oh yes, I don’t want dentures. My mom had dentures at 15.” Coming here it’s, like, I was embarrassed. You know, I’m 61 years old and my teeth are just ([vocalization]). And now it’s like, “Oh, I got teeth. I got teeth that look like my dad’s, woohoo.” Seriously. And I tell everybody, “Yeah, you need to go to Dr. Despain, he’s wonderful, he’s awesome.” They said, “Now if you have pain, just take Tylenolacetaminophen or ibuprofen.” And I said, “Okay, okay,” but I can’t take either one. And I’m like, “Okay, okay.” And I swear to you, they put this implant up in here and they said, “Now, take those medicines if you need to, or if that doesn’t work, call me, I’ll hook you up.” He knows who to put that in. I walked out to the parking lot and it didn’t hurt. It did not. I swear it did not hurt. And there was a stitch in it, two days later, I don’t know where it went. It was gone. Same with another spot that he did. Oh yeah, he had to pull this tooth back here because it was just a filling. Yeah. But he’s gonna fix that too. So, yeah, it doesn’t. I mean, I guess I have a pain threshold. I don’t know, but it’s like magic. I get to the car and it doesn’t hurt. It just doesn’t.
Before SureSmile, my teeth were all, you know, jagged, one forward, one back, and never really wanted to smile or, you know, show my teeth. I would usually use my lips over my teeth, and try to hide it, and felt really uncomfortable smiling in front of others. But since using SureSmile with Dr. Despain, he’s really brought out a lot in my comfort with smiling for anything, you know. In front of a camera, in front of people, even family. I was a little timid at smiling in front of family. But now with the improvements that I’ve seen, I can’t wait to see the final product of what he’s able to do with SureSmile. I had previously done braces when I was younger, and he mentioned that he does SureSmile. And at my age, I don’t really wanna do braces and have metal on my teeth again. I’ve been through that process. And so, having the SureSmile with the clear aligners is a wonderful option, and he does a wonderful job making sure that you get the fits that you need, and make the movements that are needed and necessary, so. So far with my smile, I’ve noticed my teeth are making huge movements. My bottom teeth were, like I say, very jagged, forward and back from each other, and he’s gotten those straightened out, and gotten the curvature of my smile more round and not so pointed. And yeah, no he’s really moved my teeth a lot with the aligners and yeah, they’ve made a huge difference in my smile. So, my family has actually made very many comments on it. “Huge improvements.” They’ve said, you know. “Wow, we can actually see your teeth, you know, when you’re at dinner with us making a joke and stuff.” And my mom always tells me, she’s like, “Yeah, you know, you follow the traits of your dad, and you don’t have wonderful teeth, but it seems like Dr. Despain is making huge improvements with that, and making you more comfortable finally, so.
Over the years the teeth that were involved in that had wore down. I had one that actually had developed a crack in it and needed to be repaired. And that was the preferred method to do it was a crown. I’m either two or three crowns into Dr. Despain here. I don’t remember exactly how many. Oh, I was ecstatic that I could just come in and get it done, and not have to make repeated trips back.
Some of the work that I had done was same-day service. I didn’t have to come back for repeated visits. Where in the past, I’d have to come in, have the work done, get a temporary fitted, come back weeks later to have the temporary pulled, and have the permanent one put on. And here it’s a one-stop, come in, sit down, get the work done, leave a couple hours later, and I’m good to go. Because I’m kind of a technology-type person, so I understand that. I knew that the technology was out there, and I was surprised that he had the technology here somewhat. But just that I like somebody that stays abreast of changing technologies, and makes that experience just much better.

You know, and I had a couple of veneers in the front that I wanted to have upgraded, and I found out that Dr. Despain was basically one of the only ones, if not the only one in Moses Lake that can do same day service with those kind of procedures too.
Well, I’ve always been a proud person because I think I have a pretty decent smile, you know, and like to see other people smile and like to make them smile. They had been on for quite some time, and they were just, you know, as the age and your gums recede and the edges start showing, things like that, I just decided it was time for an upgrade.
My previous dentist, Donald Jayne, he had a very high standard. He was voted best cosmetic dentist in Seattle years ago, and he traveled around the world and he took photos of my teeth too, and taught dentistry in other countries using my mouth. But when I saw that Dr. Despain, he’s very, very much the same high, high standard. And I don’t know, I guess I’m just one of those persons that believes that your mouth is the gateway to your health and if you haven’t got a good report with your doctor on your mouth, then you’re not gonna have as good a health as you can. And it became evident that Dr. Despain is very much focused on that total health, as I was saying, and making sure that you have a good quality that it is, but very good about matching colors, efficient, in and out in a quick time, you know, very nice.
I feel better because I feel like it’s, you know, upgraded to, you know, a pretty point, if that’s the right term or not. I don’t know, I’m being vain. But I feel like it’s a kind of solid work that, you know, people will comment, oh geez, you have such a great smile. You always take good care of your teeth. Who’s your dentist? And I tell everybody about Dr. Despain. So, you know, like I said, I just feel that, you know, it’s one of my most noticeable features and therefore, I wanna make sure that it’s the best it can be.
