Find Out How Relaxing Dentistry Can Be With Sedation

I feel like we really specialize in helping anxious patients in our office, and I think that's one thing that really sets us apart from other dental offices, is that I've gotten that extra training to be able to offer multiple different ways to sedate somebody. And there are three main ways that I'll go over with you here. One way is to do with a pill, what we call oral sedation, where somebody takes a pill an hour before their appointment, but we can give them higher doses when they come in as well.

And so instead of just giving someone one anti-anxiety medication, we can give them a lot more so that they don't remember what's going on, and most patients tend to snooze through the procedure. But we've seen it help anxious patients who are afraid to go back to their first exam, be able to have major procedures done comfortably, and often maybe laughing while we're going through that, just because they're still comfortable. And it can be hard to believe how positive we can help someone's experience be just by doing something as simple as oral sedation.

Another option is to do IV sedation. The one that I administer myself in the office is considered IV conscious sedation, meaning that if I nudge your arm, you respond to us, and so we can make sure that you're doing okay, or open your mouth if we need you to do that. But most patients tend to snooze through the appointment, they don't remember what's going on, and it's a great option for patients to have a comfortable experience.

One advantage of that over the oral sedation with the pill is that it's a lot faster, so we can help you go to sleep a lot faster, and you come out of it a lot faster as well. And so that has some advantages for a lot of patients as well. The third option we do is that we have a nurse, an anesthetist, come in who works in the hospital, and he will put you completely out and intubate you if you need to be completely, completely asleep.
And that's something we can do here in our office as well.

Enjoy Easy Dental Care With Sedation

The last thing we want is for you to feel tense and worked up during your dental visit. We're sure you'd rather feel relaxed and at ease than nervous. To help you get the most out of your smile care, we offer a choice of dental sedation options. With sedation, you'll completely relax in the dental chair and let your worries float away. We've helped many patients through their dental anxiety and would love to do the same for you.

You can take your pick from the following sedation methods:

  • Laughing Gas - This sweet-smelling gas will give you an all-over sense of euphoria and well-being after you breathe it in. You may even experience a tingly sensation over your body as you comfortably lie back without any cares.
  • A Small Pill - Before your appointment, you'll take an FDA-approved pill which Dr. Despain will prescribe for you. It will help you completely relax and unwind in the dental chair.
  • IV Sedation - If you want to be blissfully unaware of anything around you, IV sedation should be your choice. You'll be in a twilight state and won't remember much about your procedure after you wake up.

You'll also find comforting patient amenities to help you relax and feel at home:

  • Warm blankets to chase away the chill
  • Soft pillows to support your neck
  • Headphones so you can lose yourself in music

Your Appointments Go Smoothly With Sedation

Whichever sedation option is right for you, you will appreciate that it is a simple process. Here is what you can expect:

  • Dr. Despain will review your medical history with you to determine which sedation is right for you.
  • For laughing gas, you simply breathe in the nitrous oxide through a mask. It acts fast and fades quickly.
  • For oral sedation, you'll take the sedative beforehand. You feel completely at ease by the time your treatment begins. You'll still be responsive to instructions and commands we give you.
  • For IV sedation, you will come into our office and receive general anesthesia from a professional anesthetist. While you are asleep, we will complete your dental procedure.
  • With IV sedation or oral sedation, you'll need to arrange for a ride home from a friend or family member. These sedative effects typically last several hours. With laughing gas, you can drive home comfortably.

I appreciate this dental office, they have state of the art equipment and crowns are done while you wait! As a disabled vet, they are the only one I have found in Moses Lake that is proactive and they reach out to the VA for authorization. Good experience, no medical bills from them, directly... I had a wonderful experience with the hygienist I had at Skyview. She was very knowledgeable, patient, and made sure I was comfortable throughout my cleaning. Even when she was giving me an injection, I didn’t feel a thing. I’ll be coming back for my routine cleanings and dental needs for sure.

Commonly Asked Questions About Sedation Options

Does sedation dentistry work for most patients?

Yes, we offer multiple levels of sedation dentistry that will calm the fear and anxiety of any patient. We'll discuss each type of sedation in detail and help you decide on the one that will work best for your procedure. Our goal is to provide you with pain-free, anxiety-free care every time you visit our office. Our sedation options help make sure that happens.

What sedation options are available to me?

At Skyview Dental, you'll have a choice of three sedation options. We offer inhaled sedation using laughing gas, oral conscious sedation in pill form, and IV sedation that will put you in a dreamlike state. Their sedative effects range from mild to deep and will fit the needs of any patient who is nervous about receiving their dental care.

Are your sedation options safe?

Yes, our sedation dentistry is completely safe because it is expertly administered and monitored by our trained team. Inhaled sedation uses mild laughing gas, which is safe even for children. Oral conscious sedation works using a small, FDA-approved pill, and IV sedation can be adjusted throughout treatment. You can feel confident in our team's ability to use our dental sedation options for your benefit.
